I am Robin Bergstrand, based in Middlesbrough in the North East of England with 37 years experience in iron and steelmaking. Of distant Swedish ancestry, 'Rocky Beach' derives from Bergstrand - a Swedish 'nature name' inspired (so I was told) by the rocky shorelines found on many Swedish lakes and coasts. As well as ironmaking, my passions include running and cycling - usually off road.
Graduated with a BSc in Geology and MSc in Industrial Mineralogy. Joined British Steel in ferrous burden quality evaluation, specialising in high temperature softening and melting tests, before transitioning to Corus in sinter plant and blast furnace process analysis and optimisation. Then joined Rio Tinto to work globally in iron ore technical marketing and ultimately steel decarbonisation.
Techno-economics of iron & steelmaking through to liquid steel (particularly value-in-use for raw materials and process optimisation). Technical marketing, product positioning and pricing strategies for iron ores and metallics. Technology evaluation & benchmarking. Technical oversight for project studies and project financial modelling. Steel decarbonisation. Training in all of the above.
